How To Measure Your Face For A Face Mask

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, following proper social distancing guidelines has become a daily routine. This has also introduced the need to wear face masks in offices, grocery stores, and other locations where appropriate social distancing measures cannot consistently be enforced. While there are many face masks on the market today, not all of them suit your needs. MIP Cares' reusable face mask will fit properly regardless of face size and is ideal for everyday use!

Why Having The Right Mask Size Is Important

Regular mask use plays a vital role in reducing the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19. Some masks are better than others, so it's important to choose carefully. For example, MIP Cares' face mask is produced with tri-ply layers to reduce droplet emissions, while others are not.

Wearing the right face mask size helps to prevent air (potentially filled with respiratory droplets containing the virus) from flowing freely around the edges of the mask. When worn correctly, the air is forced to flow through the mask, capturing more respiratory droplets. This is why it is encouraged for as many people as possible to wear a mask to reduce the spread.

How To Measure Your Face

the 2 steps to measure your face for a face mask

Wearing the correct mask size is essential for effective filtration and comfort. To measure your face for your size, use a measuring tape or a piece of string:

  • Step 1: Measure from the middle of your nose to a little over an inch/2.5cm under your chin.
  • Step 2: Measure from your right cheekbone to your left cheekbone to find the mask's width.

This will help you find the appropriate size of face masks while shopping, as naturally, you cannot try these on before purchasing!

How To Check If Your Mask Fits Properly

A common problem with many face masks is that there can sometimes be gaps between the mask and the mask wearer's face, leading to air leakage of respiratory droplets containing a virus. To help prevent this from happening, you should find one that fits snugly against your side of the face without any leaks.

To prevent this, the CDC recommends checking for gaps by cupping your hands around the outside edges of the mask. Make sure no air is flowing from the area near your eyes or from the sides of the mask. If the mask has a good fit, you will feel warm air come through the front of the mask and may be able to see the mask material move in and out with each breath.

Extra Ways To Improve Mask Fit

If you currently have a mask that does not fit as snugly as it should, there are other ways to improve its fit.

Mask Fitters Or Braces

Mask fitters or braces can be worn over a medical or cloth mask to adjust the fit and reduce air leakage from around the edges of the mask.

Knotting & Tucking

Another handy trick is to use the knot and tuck technique to improve the fit of a medical procedure mask:

  • Knot the ear loops of the mask where they join the edge of the mask
  • Fold and tuck the unneeded material under the edges
